To All The Jobs I’ve Had Before

Have you heard that in your lifetime, you will switch careers at least 3 times? I don’t remember where or even when I heard that – but for me, that rings true.

Kind of.

I feel like I have done many things in my life – most of them boring. But I wanted to talk about the different jobs I’ve had, and my dream job(s).

A Nanny

When I was in college, I was a nanny to 3 kids under 4. Not to mention, I had my own kiddo to take care of. So 4 kids under 4. It was…. an experience. I would never do it again, so I have high respect for any childcare worker and teachers.

Medical Assistant

This is what I was going to college for. I loved working in the medical field. My first job after college was for an internal medicine physician. It was such a small practice it became pretty boring. After about 4 months, I left and started at a pediatric urgent care center, which was MY pace. I loved walking in not knowing what would walk through the front door, seeing 100+ patients a day. Eventually though, I went over and worked with a pediatrician and developed a strong relationship with her and my own patients.

During that time, I moved up and was the head inventory specialist and then Team Lead. Of course, this all happened 6 months before Kyle enlisted and we moved to Texas!

Army Wife

I not only consider this a job, but a life style.

After Kyle deployed, I became active in our FRG (Family Readiness Group) and handled a lot of different tasks and was in charge of a lot of activities. It kept me busy everyday, helped other families and kept my mind off what was going on overseas. I miss it more than I feel I should.

Stay At Home Mom

This USE to be my dream job. I love being home with my kids, don’t get me wrong, but when they are at school all day? I.WAS.SO.BORED. You can only clean your house so many times before you are bagging your head against a wall. I, personally, am just not cut out to be a stay at home mom.

Retail

Due to my remarks above, I went and got a part-time job working in a children’s clothing store. Again, it was an experience but I am NOT cut out for customer service! lol

Compliance/Licensing

Hello, corporate america. This is my current job. I work for a broker agency that deals in insurance sales. I had ZERO experience when I started but I have since taken over the department. It’s hard work; dealing with Department of Insurance, Center for Medicaid and Medicare service, large insurance carriers and individual brokers. Although there are times when I want to do something else, I love my job overall.

My dream job(s)

I want to WORK from home full-time. I could technically do my job at home, which I do a once a week, but I think I would be happy working in the publishing industry or just blogging/writing. I wish I had a door or two I could open to get me there – but for now, I am content with what I do now.

On another note, I would love to be a PA or midwife. This was my goal when I started in the medical field – but due to the moves and other LIFE things, it just didn’t work out! 🙁

What is your dream job?

I have two dream jobs… One is definitely being an author and I’m glad I’m finally doing it. It’s what I wanted to do all through high school and the years I was a web designer and developer after college. Before college, I wanted to be an astronaut, and though I think this job is far out of reach for me, I hope to one day go into space. Sigh. I really want that.

I would love to go to space! LOL Although, it’s scary to think about how vast it is and what is actually out there. (conversation for another day)

I am so happy to hear that you are doing one of your dream jobs!

Aven was the one who told me I’d switch careers at least 3 times! That made me feel better about my job crisis. Before teaching, I worked for a company that processed drug test results for CDL drivers. It was pretty secretarial, but occasionally I would use my Spanish which was fun.

My dream job? Well you know that. I want to be a publicist. I would LOVE to work from home, but I think socially, I need to work in an office and have face to face interaction. I love my dog, but… it gets a little boring around here. Hah.

My DREAM DREAM NEVER GONNA HAPPEN job is to be Sydney Bristow from Alias and work for the CIA and go on all these covert missions around the world. ROFL.

Is it weird to say I don’t know? I mean I like my job fine. But you know I complain about working all the time ha. I want to retire and travel the world. That also makes me sound lazy, lol. I want to be able to read all day and get paid for it?

Careers are so weird. This is going to sound funny since Jess wants to get out of it but I think I’d like teaching. I TAed bio classes in undergrad and really enjoyed it! but i also think I’d get annoyed with annoying kids. soooo. who knows.

I don’t have the patience to teach. There is no way i could do it. lol

Couldn’t that be something if you decided to change careers after all your loans??? I am still paying on mine and I bet it’s a fraction of what you have! lol

I was kind of forced out of my career when my company relocated to the East Coast about two years ago. There is only one other fashion industry job in my city and I refuse to move now that I bought my house.
I’m working from home now and I like it but I do miss the creative part of my life. My ultimate ‘in your dreams!’ kind of dream job would be to be a stylists for book cover shoots. I drool over the dresses sometimes 🙂

    • tonyalee

Yeah, I remember reading about that on your blog awhile back. That totally sucks! I wouldn’t have wanted to move either.

I think I would miss the interaction with people – but I don’t feel like i NEED much, ya know? As long as I have something to do at home, ie working, I will be fine 🙂

I’m currently working at my dream job : librarian ! Except… I’m a civil servant, there are less and less money, less and less employees, more and more requests. I first was a shorthand/typist, then a civil worker in a public town hall (didn’t like it – all for the rich, nothing for the rest), now I’m a librarian – all for everyone, rich or poor, wich suits me. It’s not heaven, but it’s been worse and there are books all around for everyone 😉
My next dream job ? Being retired, working for free for something I believe in and cultivating my (organic) garden 🙂

I really enjoyed this post. I love personal posts because I get a chance to learn more about blogging friends. 🙂 Before doing what I do now, I was in retail and then retail management. I still don’t know how I did it for as many years as I did. From video games to camera sales/photo developing, personalized gifts/awards to kid’s shoes… and even some makeup thrown in there. Ooooh boy. So many exciting things. That said, it was a pretty big switch to start working M-F, set hours, in an office. There are still times when I miss random days off during the week, but it’s nice to have my life back again. 🙂
