Phoebe St. Claire has devoted herself to saving her family's hotel empire--but her best efforts have not been good enough. With her whole world in turmoil, the tenacious go-getter turns to the once love of her life. Far from innocent, Jeremy McQueen was the guy from the wrong side of the tracks who her parents would never have approved of. Their years apart have only made the sexy bad boy more irresistible than ever--and their reunion is explosive.
When she asks Jeremy to help her salvage her family business, he agrees immediately, with only one condition--he wants her in his bed.
But soon surprising circumstances leave Phoebe reeling. Was this fairy tale romance just too good to be true? Will Jeremy's secrets pull them apart all over again?
I received this book for free from The Publicist in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Ah, Toxic. How I love thee. You took me by surprise with your fast paced, twisty plot. Characters who, I not only admired, but rooted for from the beginning. Whose chemistry and (frequent) hot -n- sexy scenes lit my kindle on fire. Your angst kind of irritated me at times though – but this pesky detail I can over look.
Whew, this book y’all.
Toxic really did take me by surprise. I was expecting an angst filled second chance romance, but I wasn’t expecting all the LAYERS in the plot, the characters, secrets and drama. I was blown away, more than once, but how much everything in the story intertwines.
I loved that we get a few chapters in the beginning of the past between Phoebe and Jeremy. It was just a glimpse into their all-consuming Summer fling, and how things ended all too soon. At first, I wanted more. I wanted to see all the things they did and watch them fall in love. But once they re-connected, it was hotter and much deeper than I could have imagined.
Phoebe was a difficult character to relate to, at first. Personally, I think it’s hard looking at a character that lives an extravagant and good life, has to complain about. Yet, once more layers were peeled back, I got it. That’s why Jeremy is toxic, yet perfect, for her. He brought her out of her shell and showed her what’s it like to live care-free and spontaneous. I loved the Phoebe with Jeremy.
Jeremy comes off as a typical bad boy from the “wrong side” of the tracks. He’s brooding, complex, spontaneous and a rule breaker. He’s a foul-mouthed dirty talker and has no qualms with taking what he wants. In hind sight – they are completely opposite. They shouldn’t work, but they do and it’s intense. And you guess it, Toxic.
Both Phoebe and Jeremy have deep-rooted issues, jealousy and hot tempers just being two. So many times things were misunderstood and/or blown out of proportion due to this. It was frustrating; because logic would say to SIT DOWN AND TALK. But it’s not IN THEM to do that right away, until one blows a gasket or goes off the handle. Everything they feel and do is intense. Which in turn, caused a lot of heart ache, angst and more drama.
Now these two together? Hot, intense all-consuming chemistry. I can’t think of another couple that have such deep-rooted affection, attraction and chemistry than these two. I am not a reader that likes a lot of sex in books, but man. I did not CARE in Toxic. There is so much passion there.
Not only do we have these two – we have an array of secondary charters as well. Phoebe’s tight-knit band of friend; each one adding an additional layer to the mix. I did confuse them all at first, since there are so many to keep track of. But the main two, Lily and Jamie, I adored. They are supportive and funny.
Again, I want to mention the many mind-boggling plot twists. I was amazed on how so many things (and people, too) added to the dynamics of not only Phoebe and Jeremy’s lives individually, but their relationship as well. So many times I thought I knew everything; the direction of the story and what would happen and I was wrong.
If you are looking for a standalone romance that is hot, sexy, with an array of complex characters and a whirlwind of a plot, look no further. Toxic is IT. Highly recommend!
