A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I'm going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal's office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that — that, I know how to do.

I received this book for free from The Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

My Take:

Sustained was my first Emma Chase novel — and I can see why her books are a favorite among many. Her writing is smooth, engaging and good grief, was this book hilarious!

Truth be told, there are very few novels from just a Male POV (in romance) that I have read. Most are female, or dual, and it was fun and refreshing to get the story strictly from Jake’s POV. Being in his head is exhausting; in the best way. He’s funny, charming and even though there were times I was wanting to punch him, I felt his character was genuine. Lord knows what runs through a man’s head on any given moment, ya know!? I almost feel I had the advantage of meeting Jake in Sustained (I didn’t read the first book, Overruled) because I heard he was quite the ass.

Which isn’t to say he wasn’t an ass. Because he was. 😉

I adored Chelsea! I admired her for what she took on after the death of her brother. It takes a strong woman to take on 6 kids at her age, and I love her for that. She has a soft, vulnerable side to her that I loved seeing. These two together just made my heart soar! The sexual tension (and scenes *wags eyebrows*) their banter and easy camaraderie too. I was a little EH at first because I had a feeling that Jake would do something completely stupid and I was too attached to Chelsea and the kids to watch it!

The McQuaid kids were the icing on the cake! While at times I felt their personalities were written too mature for their age, they were hilarious, sweet and my heart ached for them and their loss. I couldn’t personally understand their anger and pain, but I sympathized. Their life too, was turned upside down.

I was surprised by how much this book tugged on the heart-strings. Jake’s past and his connection to the one person that took him in. How he channels that into wisdom and snark with the kids. His fears of not being good enough for Chelsea and the kids. The romance too, was not only hot but sweet, too. It’s always the small things that get ya!

Overall – I adored this book! It’s quick wit, hilarious moments with the perfect amount of sweet, tender moments thrown in. I am looking forward to more in this serious. I highly recommend it!

Woo! I’m so happy you enjoyed this one! Jake is an ass, but definitely a loveable one. I loved how much of a softie he was with the kids towards the end. And I’m with you! Chelsea was an amazing character! I loved that girl. And those kids! Haha! My favorite was the little one who only knew how to say “Hi!”. That scene with Jake and her melted me a little. 🙂
Great review, Tonya! You should read more of Emma Chase’s books. They are all really funny! (And they are great on audio according to Nereyda!).
